Raife is a Drachon, an Arcane species that is dying out because of their particular need for their mates. If they don't mate and get their mate pregnant after maturity, they go insane and die. He knows who his mate is, but Katya is a Sanguen, a type of vampire, and his blood could be poison to her. When he nearly mates her one night, he knocks her out (gently, no force involved) takes her to her uncle and leaves with the man's promise that he will find Katya a mate far away from him.Katya doesn't know what happened. One minute she is with a man she trusts with her life and the next she awakened in a lab being experimented on. She can't believe it when after a year of torture she is thrown in a cage with Raife and expected to mate with him. With the instinct driving them both, how can she resist? But with his betrayal, how can she give in?
There are a lot of twists and turns in this story, and it certainly kept me reading. The second characters are intriguing and I can't wait to read about Tag, which is her next book. The story moves along at a good pace and the writing was good, with not a lot that made me scratch my head and wonder what that was about, or that forced me to stop the flow of the story because of some jarring dialog or error. Trust me, I've read some books like that and they drove me nuts. There was good chemistry between Raife and Katya, but I sometimes felt that so much was going on in the story it got lost in the weeds and fizzled at times. I would have also liked to have seen the author start the book with the scene that started the whole misery, the night Raife got his mating mark. It felt like a part of the book was missing.
Overall, the book was an excellent read and I would highly recommend it, along with the first in the series "More than Blood"

Wow! Could not put the book down until I finished it. Amanda Vyne is now one of my favorite authors. I bought all three Arcane Crossbreed books and have finished two. Onto the next one!
Katya and Raife's story is a nice addition to the series. Great read, Raife's character is loving, tentative, and a little overbearing. Which seems to work well with Katya's needs that she is not aware of. How many times does one woman need rescued?
Kept me enthralled from beginning to end

The story takes a while to build. Also way to many love scenes for me. I want this series to work for me but it is to drawn out.
While the first book was my absolute favorite, this one came somewhat close. I found the plot to be a bit confusing with the timeline, I remember she showed up in the first book in the restaurant when Gabriel was hurt, and I couldn't figure how this could be when she was locked up for a year. Anyhoo, I will continue to keep reading this series.
The characters are so irritating. The male is such a neanderthal, the female so stubborn, it makes no sense. How is is that the drachon species is so fierce and protective when is comes to mates and children, but the main female character would starve herself and her baby because she was scared of herself? If her basic instinct is protect her mate by going into a rage and killing her enemies, wouldn't she be just as protective of her baby?
Ridiculous characters. I only finished it because I can't leave a book unfinished.
Much as I enjoyed book one of this series, More Than Life one didn't hold my interest as tightly as the first novel. The plot was interesting and somewhat layered, but I guess I don't get the relationship between the protagonists Kat and Raife - probably because Raife had watched her grow from a four-yr old and there's a weirdness factor that it turned into a romantic relationship. I'd read more of the series, but this was not my favorite.
